There are just so many options here and I’m not even sure where you are in the world so it’s hard to give specific recommendations.

However, if you do a search for "your town SEO" you will find that there are lots of companies pretty close to you. If you use Google you’ll get the best results for this because they are more and more focused on local searches these days.

If the site is established and fairly big in terms of content you might need SEM (search engine marketing) rather than SEO.

If the site is new, has never been optimized for keywords or if you have very little content to start with, you need to get the SEO work done first – there is no point marketing a site that is not optimized.

If you are really early on in the development of the site and you do most of the work for it yourself, you might consider transferring over to a company that guides you step by step through the whole process so you can do it all yourself.

It really depends where you are and what you want in terms of where you are already and where you want to go with the site. I find that SEO and SEM are best done face-to-face between clients and professionals so don’t go to anyone who claims to be able to do it all online – the communication is all wrong.

But when you do that local search I suggested earlier, see which one or ones come first on the list. If they can do SEO well for themselves they should be capable of doing a good job for you too.

I would go to an agency rather than an SEO shop if you can. It largely depends on your budget. An agency has more experience with full-service marketing, and can get your site promoted. Most SEO companies will simply give you a list of keywords, update your page’s tags, and give you advice on how to build links.

Below is the agency I work for. We’re good, but if you’re looking for something in your own area there may be a similar agency.
