What can i do to promote a new website? Its an online news dissemination portal. budget is negligible?
i have almost non existant budget so am looking for ideas which can be executed for free or by barter. any kind of ideas would do. they just need to be executable in the real world. thanks a lot for taking time out to help a guy in distress cause deadline is almost on my head….

Start a related weblog using software such as WordPress. Submit the RSS feeds for the site to blog directories such as technorati or Blog Search.
Comment on other peoples blogs — but make sure you do not spam. Read the post, add your appropriate comment, do not include a link to your site in the body of your comment, only in your profile.
Write articles and submit them to article directories. Include a link to the portal site in your article signature.
Post on forums related to the news topic. Include the site link in your profile and in your signature (if allowed by the forum rules). Make sure you are participating in the community, not spamming. And make sure the people on the forum are interested in what you have to say and in your site’s topic. Posting about cloth diapers on a celebrity website isn’t going to get you the traffic you want.
Write newsworthy press releases and submit them to the press release directories.
These ideas will get your started.
Good luck!

I have gotten traffic to my site for various niches, without paying a dime in advertising, 3 Strategies – 1 will get you listed on Googles first apge, the other 2 will get thousands of targeted traffic to your site in just over 1 month!
I personally had 5,320 targeted visitors in my first month! These strategies do work…

I’m going to speak only from how I used to do it with my Internet security site…
Trade links.
Go to similar sites and email the webmasters and see if they’d be interested in trading links with you. Lots of sites have a page or something for external links.
Guerrilla advertising.
I used to have people write my URL on anything they could find. They typically took it to things like paper money, school bleachers, and things like that. I didn’t ask them to do anything illegal (although they did vandalize things) I just asked them to help spread the word.
Links.
Link to relevant sites on your site to help get your page ranked better on search engines. And of course, submit your URL to search engines.
Topsites.
Submit your site to topsite lists. Find one that gets a lot of traffic and you’ll be set. Time will move your site up and you’ll benefit from those hits.
Other than that, make posters for bulletin boards, get a cheap ad in the classifieds in your area, things like that.
Nothing is going to shoot your site up too quickly, though. Just put lots of work into your site, though, and promote the hell out of it and in time, it’ll turn around.
