On-page optimization is nothing but making the web pages of a website to be search engine friendly.  Some websites would be having HTML pages which have a good chance of being crawled by the spiders from the search engines better than Flash.  The following points should be considered for performing on-page optimization,

1.  Analyzing the content and optimizing it.
2.  Title Tag optimization.
3.  META tag optimization.
4.  Code Optimization.
5.  Title Optimization.

Why is content optimization of a website is important for SEO?
When a crawler from a search engine descends on the home page of a website, it goes for the content, searches and picks information available in the content of the website such as keywords, relative title, tags, and stores this in its database (this will be used for matching and listing when certain keywords are used for search).  Thus, you have to make sure that you position the keywords in the content to be captured by crawlers from search engines.  If the content is not strong or if it does not contain any keywords, then the crawlers will not match your website to the relevant keywords via content.

Why is Code Optimization important for SEO?
This is a crucial factor, and many SEO optimizers do not know what is code optimization.  The code optimization is finding errors in the codes in the script and rectifying them.  It is to make the website error free (W3C validation).

What is title tag optimization?
The title of a topic has considerable value since it will be first analyzed by the crawlers, only after crawling it, the crawler will move to the body of the text.  Thus, use keywords in the title itself so that it will be easy for the crawlers to grasp the information to match and list.

What is a META data and what is META tag optimization?
META data means the information about the document rather than containing the document itself.  For example:  If there a content in a web page, you can set a META data for it, of the main or important aspect of the content, it could be a name, a word or a phrase.  META tag optimization is selecting the keywords and feeding it in the META data.  It is required since the crawlers from the search engines give importance to META tags as well.  The search engines will easily pick up this information from META data and transmit it to the database.

On-page optimization enhances the content of your website. It is related directly to the content and structure of the website.  Normally the web pages contain Hyper Text Markup Language (HTML) or other document formats that are indexed by search engines like, Microsoft Word or PDF formats. The main idea behind on-page optimization is to remove redundant HTML codes and to restructure the site in such a way so as to produce better linked and focused page content. These are very simple steps that anybody can learn and implement. Step 1, title optimization, was discussed in my previous article.  Here, the topic chosen for discussion is Meta tag optimization.

We all know that the web pages are created through tags. Meta tags are very important from the SEO stand point because the spiders cannot see the webpage but can read the content of the tags. So, optimization of the Meta tags content has an important role to play in search engine optimization.

Meta Tags Optimization
Meta description contains a summary of your website and focuses on the products and services that your business is specialized in. If this description is appealing to the reader, then he/she is sure to go through the website in more detail. The way the description is written is important because if it is too monotonous or generic the reader will simply ignore and move away from the website.  So a lot of time is spent in creating keyword and description Meta tags. Yahoo uses the description tag to provide a summary of the site in the Search Engine Results Pages (SERP). It is not used for ranking pages.

Google, Yahoo! and Bing use the text they find on the page as a description. So, take care to ensure that your first header and the sentences that follow describe the contents. The importance given by search engines to Meta tags is not very clear. It is always better to write the first few paragraphs very well as search engines give more prominence to the content at the top of the page and some consider only the first few paragraphs.

Points to remember when writing a Meta Description
•    Give a crisp description about your website.  It places you at an advantageous position in SERP.
•    Keywords can be included as they give you some advantage in Google’s relevancy algorithm.
•    If you have not included you contact number in the title tag you can include it in the description tag.

Other HTML Tag Optimization
Apart from the title and the description, the content of the website should be divided into sections with appropriate headings and subheadings. Set the important headings as level 1 heading and the sub-headings as level 2 or 3 headings by using appropriate HTML tags. The text to be emphasized should be made bold, italic, etc. The spiders give a lot of importance for the text within the header tags. So make sure they include the important keywords.

Meta tag optimization makes sure that the content of the website is clearly understood by the reader and also ensures that the spider can easily assess what the website contains. Be sure to make use of the added advantage in your search engine optimization.

How do I get my home business website listed on search engines for no money?

A friend who has an earthlink account asked me to throw up a simple
site to showcase his home business, get it listed, and spend no money.
I succeeded, but am having trouble with the submission to search
engines. I picked up a listing in MSN, YAHOO and GOOGLE. I submitted
only the home page, not every single page. I used meta statements, but
am not sure anymore how much they are used. The text on the home page
amply describes the business and could be used in lieu of
metastatements. The ranking seems to have fallen over the last couple
of months.

I haven’t done this kind of thing for a few years, so I’m not sure
about metastatements, or if there is some cheap or free software that
will assist in the submission process.

If I was allowed to spend money, I could probably have it listed and
rank fairly well, but within the "no money" guidelines, what more can I
do to ensure his site does, if not well, at least better.

I was compelled to publish this article after noticing several SEO specialists writing in reference to meta tags being dead or obsolite. Meta tags are not dead. I will be the first to say, meta tags are utilized by all major search engines and are very much in use and extremely important to search engine ranking. To test the dead meta tag theory, our source code editor changed one word in the meta description tag and we dropped to #15 in the search results. Our rankings on Google and several other search engines suffered even more so. Needless to say we made changes accordingly. All major search engines definitely utilize meta tags for a description of the webpage and for indexing within the search results.


The title tag is one of the most important on page factors to consider. This is because search engine spiders read this tag first and place a high level of importance on the keywords found there. The title tag is also used for the title of your listing in the search results. The contents of your title tag will also appear in the top left corner of the browser bar. Correct title tag optimization is essiential and will result in a dramatic increase in your search engine ranking. The title tag should contain at least one or more keywords to be of any relevance to the webpage.


Search engine spiders read the description meta tag next. This tag is often used as a website description in the search results. The description tag should also contain a few keywords. The keyword meta tag is also vital to search engine ranking giving search engine spiders a sample of relevant text and content within a webpage. Other meta tags include robots, resource, author, copyright etc. These tags are not as important as the title, description and keyword tag, however they should be included if possible. To acheive high search engine ranking optimize your meta data. Proper onpage optimization will greatly improve your search engine placement.

I think every one is going to answer – Yes. And a very common belief is that add lot of most searched keywords in the meta tags of your web pages and see your site skyrocketing. But it feels highly frustrating when this magic proves of no avail. Remember, meta tags alone don’t do a magic in getting better placed in the search pages. These meta tags sure help you to describe your web pages to a search engine and gain a better place in its results. But at the same time they help search engine too to prevent indexing of improper web pages. Which may have good weight keywords in their meta tags but having no relationship with the contents of the page.

Meta tags are the blocks which contain information about the contents of your web page and they exist into the head area of your web page. They are basically meant to communicate with the search engine. Most of the Meta tags are visible to the search engine only and not the visitor on your web page. But, Title tag is one which is visible to the search engine and the visitor as well. Most importantly, it attracts the search engine and the visitor very aggressively. Most search engines consider this tag as the primary information about the site and also an human visitor sees this information as the first thing on top left corner of the browser. Moreover, when one bookmarks the site, the text in this tag appears in the bookmarks list.

In this article, I have tried to focus mainly on ‘Title Meta Tag’ that how a good Title Meta Tag can render a great help in optimization of a website.

What is the significance of Meta Title Tag

Amongst the three major Meta tags (Meta Title Tag, Meta Keywords Tag, Meta Description Tag) the Title Tag is one which is given the most weight by search engines’ algorithms. In fact, this tag should be written so that it should give the idea about your site instantly. A perfect written Title tag can generate quick and appreciable traffic to your site. The text written in this tag appears as clickable text in the search engine result page (SERP) and if it is really meaningful and conveys most about the web page, more clickthroughs will be the result.

This small example explains the function of Meta Title tag better. Suppose I need to visit San Francisco and need a road map of the city and go to a book store to find the same. There are lot of books on tourism and travel with different titles but my attention will go to a title which says something like “”Latest Road Map of San Francisco”" rather than a title “”All about San Francisco”". May be the second book contains better information about the subject I am looking for. But the title of first one speaks exactly about what I need. This how a better title gains priority over the other because of the contents of its title. This is exactly what happens with search engine. It picks the most matching title with the query and places in its result page as clickable text.

Should the Company name appear in Title Tag

Well, I would say sure if your company is really a big entity like IBM, Microsoft or Cisco or some well know brand like Sony, Phillips etc. Because people may want to search for those companies or brands with their names. But in normal cases it should not be so.

Suppose, your company is “”Larry Tours and Travels”" in San Francisco. Instead of writing “”Welcome to the home of Larry Tours and Travels”" in the title tag it would be better to write something like “”tour operators, travel agents, car rental,bay area tours, san francisco tours – Larry Tours and Travel”". Do a good research to find best keywords and phrases which describe your site best. My suggestion is that the length of the title tag should be between 15 to 20 words making it attractive enough that it looks interesting to the person searching for your business and he clicks through.

Few tips for writing good Title tags.

Try including the content relevant keywords in the title tag. This would help placing your site better in search engine result page (SERP) when someone searches those keywords.

The Title Tag

But at the same time if keywords are too often repeated, chances are that the site gets marked out as “”spam”". However, if your target keyword are not included enough, its ranking will not be optimized. The content should have included all of your keywords. The aggregate keyword density (all the keywords used in keyword tag) should be between 20% to 30% but not less than 5% to the best optimized results. However, Density for a single keyword should not be less than 2% and higher than 6%. The best is about 5% with the major keywords and 2% with subsequent keywords.

The Meta tags should be fine tuned with the contents and a good relevance is brought about between themselves with a perfect balance between the target audience and the search engines.
