I need information on obtaining grants for a college office.?
I am planning on interviewing for a position tomorrow within a college office, and one of my main points is that grants are out there for the office to use, and grow. I am sure they are out there, but search engines are not a good tool to use, because you will end up with a lot of student resources, instead of for the college itself. I would really appreciate it if I could find a source of both Illinois, and Federal grants available to colleges and universities, as I am not very sure how to come across this information without the position itself. If a career placement, internship, graduate, or non traditional grant seems to come to mind, feel free to elaborate, as that is my main focus. Thank you for your help.

When interviewing for a prospective job, it’s best to stick with what you know. Employers like to focus on your experience and what you can bring to them. So, this grant thing could be a good topic of discussion for an area you would like to gain staff development in, but I would avoid trying to sound like an expert in the matter…. because honestly, "I am sure they are out there" shows me (and your interviewers) a lack of experience in this matter. This conversation isn’t going to get you this job. Stick with what you know and what you have done so far that will benefit them… don’t pretend to be something you are not.
The people interviewing you, THEY will be the experts on this matter and if you attempt to do this, all they will do AFTER you leave the interview is focus on what you didn’t know, or what things you mentioned that were blatantly wrong in. Don’t pretend to be something you aren’t. I would refocus your strategy. Find out as much about the school and the dept as you can, but allow THEM to be the expert, ask lots of questions and see if you can get the back story of their dept FIRST… that way you aren’t saying something to make them not want to hire you.
