As someone else mentioned, it will depend on your target keyword and it´s SEO difficulty rating and it can take from 2 weeks to 9 months depending on your keyword.

Here is a general guideline to estimate how long the process will take if you hire a good SEO company:

number of monthly searches for target keyword
number of Google search reseults
Domain name
Age of website
Competitor´s website

To optimize the website yourself, its not a difficult process just a long and tedious one which involves:

Backlink building
SEO website design or redesign
meta tags
article and Press release submissions
and many more

It depends on the keywords you want to target, for example if you want "mobile phone" keyword to achieve top ranking, it will take alot of time, but if you use less competitive keyword it will take less time, I have been doing Search Engine Optimization for many years, if you seek professional help, let me know about the keywords you want to target and i will look in to it.

The timeframe differs from website to website because each niche/keyword is different. Some niches like "myspace layouts" are very competiive and will take a long time to rank for. For easy terms like "black emo layouts" would be easier and would take less time.

SEO is a process and takes time, thats the first thing you should know and understand. You have to see what keyword you are competing for and how many search results come up, if its over 400k or so, thats a good amount of competition.
