The same way as you go into your marketing degree. Make ambition and start learning about it.
To know about the basics you may refer this SEO article : http://www.webtoolhub.com/article-a21-what-is-search-engine-optimization-seo.aspx
For SEM refer this : http://www.webtoolhub.com/article-a20-what-is-search-engine-marketing-sem.aspx

depends what area you want to get into?
are you wanting to do affiliate marketing via maybe click bank or amazon? Do you want to create your own products or reports?
it depends what you want to learn.. if its blogging lots of free platforms are about like wordpress and blogger to try it out for free… if you want to learn more about strategies for getting traffic then you could try here:
if its more building affiliate stores maybe using bans (build a niche store) or phpbay or reviewazon then check out here for some good info:

hope this gives a bit more of an idea on what you may want to focus on.

IYou will need to research on a credible and possibly a short practical course that helps to combine your marketing skills with SEO. I would suggest a 12 week course that I myself studied and which I admit is a very good course. The course is taught in over 30 universities and students graduate with a business with addition options of becoming webmasters and SEO experts. You can get the information here.

There are free certified courses online. I know one which includes a competitive SEO software. However, I cannot give a link here.
Try doing a search for "online SEO courses".
You can also read blogs and articles about SEO. Pick those who are at the top of search results because they obviously know what they preach.

Look no more. This is probably the best site Ive came upon, check it out.

brodan’s advice is good.
I would add to it… Set up a blog or site of your own. Even if it’s not something you make money from, you’ll learn a ton about making a site ranking the search engines by getting out there and trying to do it.
Unfortunately, all too many people in the SEO field sell their services and then figure out how to do it. The ethical thing is to actually go figure out how to do SEO first.
