Simply look at your bottom line.

Are you making more money now than before you began investing in the SEO, or is the money you’ve put into SEO merely returning a minimal amount of additional sales/profits?

Rankings, traffic, etc…none of that makes any difference at all. The only goal of a business is to make money. All the traffic in the world won’t do that for you unless that traffic converts to sales. Period.

If you are getting the kind and level of traffic you need, that’s when you know your SEO efforts are really worth the investment.

- Has your traffic increased because of your SEO efforts?
- How are you ranking in the organic search engines?
- What search engines are you ranking well? If you are in Google but nowhere in Yahoo, do you know why?
- Are you ranking well in the keywords that you are hoping to penetrate (your money keywords)? If not, what else can you do to get that top 10 spot in your important keywords?
- If you are doing paid search engine marketing, how well is this traffic converting? What is your ROI?
- Are more sites linking to you now?

The bottom line of every SEO effort should always be targeted traffic — visitors who are interested in what you offer.

A lot of SEO efforts including titles, text, the right keywords, etc. will all take a lot of time.

Unfortunately what really works well with Yahoo might not or probably won’t work with Google. Personally… I don’t think anyone really has that one figured out but that’s another question…

Make a list of your top keywords in your site that you’re trying to get listed or ranked…

Then about once a month… check the rankings on those top ten in Yahoo, Google and maybe MSN.

If they are moving up then what ever you’re doing is worth the effort.

You didn’t state if your site is an e-commerce site, an information site or whatever… Different kinds of sites require different kinds of SEO work.

Good Luck

You may need to use SEO software such as WebPosition 4 to
check how high your pages rank for each keyword you are targeting. This type of software provides information about how visible your site is on the four most significant search engines.

Be sure to run some kind of tracking program on your site. You’ll need to review the number of visitors on a regular basis. Here is some tips to consider: http://www.richkahmer.com/build-a-website.html

Maybe try running a Google AdWords campaign to test how traffic converts into sales?

This way you can get a good idea about how much profit increased search engine traffic will bring to your site. This will also show you the keywords which are targeting users who are likely to make a purchase so that you can optimise for keywords which can successfully bring customers to your site.

I think you have to know what your business goals are for your website. Is it traffic? Is it leads? Or is it sales?

Once you know this, you can track your web logs to see if you are getting the results you are looking for. Some times people concentrate too much on traffic when what they really need is to make improvements to their conversions from the visitors they are already getting.

A good SEO company will work with you on all aspects.
