Hi,
You need to submit your website to http://www.jayde.com, and http://www.pingomatic.com at a minimum. This will help the major search engines index your site so that it is listed in search results.
Search engines such as Yahoo and Google love fresh content, so the more often your website is updated, and fresh content is added, the better.
You also need to build links as previously mentioned. The more one-way links (links to your site) you have, the more your site is seen as an authority, and so the higher it ranks.
You can down load the vile silencer (crazy name I know!) list from http://info.vilesilencer.com/main.php?rock=add_url.php and submit your site to the relevant directories. You would be advised to use a new email address when submitting to these directories to avoid spam in your main email account.
If applicable, you can write articles relating to your products or service. For example, if you sell bikes, you can write articles about the different types of bike available, why people should use a bike etc. These articles are then submitted to article sites such as http://www.articletrader.com and the many other article submission sites. These then provide a link to your website. Equally as important, when people search for information about bikes, they see your articles listed, and then having read the articles, visit your website. We have had a lot of success with using articles, and gain a lot of visitors this way.
Remember also to focus on keywords that visitors are likely to use when searching for your product or service. People use model names as well as generic terms. For example if you sell TVs, people will be searching for Widescreen TV, television, digital televisons, HD TVs, Sony XYZ, flatscreen etc. If you just target television, you will lose out.
Also, use a blog to let search engines know that your site has been updated.
There are also many on-page changes that can be made to your website that will help search engines find your website. These include making sure all images have alt tags, that the full path of the website is included in any links, and including the product name in links where applicable.
The more your site is seen as an "authority" on a given subject (ie the products or service you provide), the higher up the search engines you will be. You can also use Google Analytics to see the amount of traffic your website gets, and see how you can improve.
Hope this is of some use.

Why? Pagerank really means nothing. What you do you want is to be on the first page in a search engine for a given keyword. Go to msn or live search and type in psychic ability and you will see my site as number 1 and it has a page rank of 2. To get pr you really need a good link exchange system or pay to have your site listed on a pr7 site main page.

So does everyone else right ? I have a solution if you are in a hurry. Search engine indexing takes time, and they like it to be built up naturally or you risked being sandboxed.
