1) Submit your URL to major search engines.
For google go to
http://www.google.com/addurl/?continue=
and
http://base.google.com
for yahoo go to
http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.htm
for msn it is
http://search.msn.com/docs/submit.aspx

2) Add meta tags..i.e. keywords describing your website in meta tags.
3) add more incoming links to your website from other websites.
4)Share your website links with similar sites.
5) Do have a sitemap.
6)Prefer static html wherever possible.
7) One tip, which is less known that make a lot of pages like your index or default page and have hidden links to them all over your website
8) Create Error-free and static HTML as far as possible
9) Submit your site to good directories like Yahoo, DMOZ.org, zeal.com
10) Write a blog for your site
11) Make a robots.txt file and put it in the root , containing name of all the searchable web pages i your website.

The best way to increase your Eigen Value (which is what Google uses to determine page ranking) is to have a bunch of other sites pointing to yours. The most important factor in the Eigen Value is that other important pages think that your page is important. You should try to optimize your placement on 3 word search terms, it’s now next to impossible to get great placement on 1 or 2 word terms.

Source – 12 years in the business including 5+ years at the #1 placeholder for ‘web hosting’, which is one of if not THE most difficult term to get good placement for. [i also have personal sites that are 6/10, 5/10 and 4/10.]

"PageRank performs an objective measurement of the importance of web pages by solving an equation of more than 500 million variables and 2 billion terms. Instead of counting direct links, PageRank interprets a link from Page A to Page B as a vote for Page B by Page A. PageRank then assesses a page’s importance by the number of votes it receives.

PageRank also considers the importance of each page that casts a vote, as votes from some pages are considered to have greater value, thus giving the linked page greater value. Important pages receive a higher PageRank and appear at the top of the search results. Google’s technology uses the collective intelligence of the web to determine a page’s importance. There is no human involvement or manipulation of results, which is why users have come to trust Google as a source of objective information untainted by paid placement. "

Essentially, page rank is all about link building. It makes sense that the more pages that point to you about a specific term, the more relevant your website is. Take note that the importance of each page "casting" a vote is also a factor, so link farms should be avoided at all costs. If you want to improve your Google page rank, you have to make sure your website is relevant enough to obtain links from other websites without providing a link back to theirs.
