firstly, you need to choose a keyword phrase that you want to be picked up by search engines. That phrase should be in your headline and text at least three times. Also, choose your keywords wisely and target your market. Have betweeen 5 and 10 keywords and make sure they are all in your text at least 3 times.
Once you have your page made, use social bookmarking to help rank it faster with the search engines and write some articles about your site and submit to article directories.
You need to generate back links to your website also by leaving comments on relative blogs or other sites.
This is the basics but will help.

You can implement basic SEO for your website yourself if you are tech savy person. However would recommend hiring a good SEO company who can deliver results for you.

This is a *big* question. The answer depends entirely on what you need to achieve.
Like most of us, you’ll be wanting targeted traffic; so follow the advice of others here, and settle on a basket of keyword phrases that match the keyword phrases that someone looking to _buy_ from you would use to find your site.
That last is important, unless you’re playing the numbers game and just want to build a list of prospects. Generally speaking, the more targeted the traffic, the more likely they are to buy from you or click on an AdSense advert.
