I have been doing SEO for small business websites and starter sites for 3 years now and have used many of the social sites – a few favorites that you should definitely use are del.icio.us which I have had a lot of success with, also Digg.com. It really depends on what your trying to gain popularity for YouTube.com of course is the perfect site for video marketing etc.
Best advice I would have for you is to first think of what type of product or service your trying to market, and then choose the best social sites that apply….I myself always use a combination of most, if not all of the worthy social sites out there, and find a way to work in the service or product I am trying to market. It will take longer, but the long term payoff is very worth while and thus far has been a success for me & my clients.
