Does repeating the same word 5 or more times on a page improve your search rank?
The well-known and well praised local division of the franchise TheBestOf.co.uk have written on behalf of my dad two promotional pieces for online ad’s on the bestofcirencester.co.uk (their franchisee site). I have built up a fairly good idea of promotional writting through various courses and practise and now feel confident I know a fair bit about what grabs peoples attention and what simply bores them.
I was reading over the two pieces and noticed some things which I would change in a way that I feel would benifit the whole article. However I was quickly told that the use of the same word 5 or more times was benifical to the search listings as it means google and other search engines will pick it up.
As I do web development myself I have a basic idea of SEO and I though search engines will generally get keywords from meta tags and the first (few) paragraph(s) of a site and using the same word actually lowers your listing for spam based reasons.
Who is correct?

It depends on type of keyword..
If a keyword is not competitive or it is not present too many times across the web for example you name, then repeating keywords makes sense… but if a keyword is present across the web too many times.. then lot of other factors comes into play..

There is not an exact answer to your general question except to say that search engines ignore the contents of the keyword meta tag for ranking purposes.
However as far as your Dad’s promotional pieces it will not make the slightest difference because deep pages in the http://www.thebestof.co.uk/cirencester/ are very poorly indexed.
For example if you search Google for the exact (use quotation marks) phrase "planning a building project in Cirencester" there are no results.
However there is a page http://www.thebestof.co.uk/cirencester/56949/1/1/the_best_of.aspx containing that very phrase.
I would not rely to much on this directory.
There is no substitute for your own well promoted website.

I have read google claims about spamming and wanting normal content. One of my best friends builds websites and consults to companies like Motorola and other tec companies. He spams hard. He uses hidden words the same color as the back ground and repeats 150 to 200 Keywords at least 10 times in what appears to be empty space. He claims that search engines use the top third of most pages.
Google and yahoo will not give specific details on what is excessive spaming.
No one knows who is correct.
