Question by Kirsten: How to remove a convertible top?
Okay, Thad (my boyfriend) has an ’89 Cobra Mustang GT 5.0 Convertible. He needs a new top and has already ordered one. The problem is, he doesn’t know how to install it, and neither do any of the guys in his family, though they’ve worked on cars their whole lives. The installation kits don’t come with instructions, which is a load of crap, and we don’t have time to find the manufacturer of the car, since it’s just as old as he is (19 years. Could say 18 but the car was made in 1988 and sold as an ’89.). Now, can anyone tell me how to install the top, or at least give me a website where I can read and learn how? Thank you so much!! I can’t wait until I can drive it. =)

In your case, it’s going to have to be take the old one off, piece by piece and document the entire process with pictures.
The other option is to pay a professional to install it.
I personally would go with having a pro do it.
Another option is to find a library that carries Ford Mustang related magazines and microfiche on file and look for stories that deal with installations. It may take some time doing the research, but at least your results will be free.
You might also check ebay for repair manuals that cover that particular year of mustang. You can do the same research through the reference materials at the library.
I’d buy the Chiltons or Haynes manual for your 89 also. I’m sure convertibles are covered.
You aren’t likely to find anything online.
Hope this helps.
