Top 3 Website Promotion Methods

Website promotion is the most important thing you can do for your website. It is even more important than the style and the appearance of your site because if no one knows your website exists, does it really matter how good it looks? While there are a number of different methods to use when you promote your website there are some that are going to work better than others and knowing which ones are the best will save you time and trouble.

While there is again many different options that you can go with when promoting your website there are three in particular that have proven over the years to be the best of the best when it comes to website promotion. Here are the top three website promotion methods:

1. Search Engine Optimization -SEO-: The best way to get recognition for your website is to have it picked up by all the top search engines such as Google, Yahoo, and Ping. In order to have the search engines take notice of your site you have to be sure that your site is built using proper SEO techniques. This includes using Meta tags, title tags, keywords, having proper keyword density, and much more. The biggest thing with using SEO techniques is to be sure that everything that is in your site is relevant to the site as a whole. In other words, if your website is one that sells mobile phones, don’t have content in there that is about cat food. Search engines love relevancy and if you go against their rules you will be penalized.

2. Pay Per Click -PPC-: One of the fastest ways to get some much needed traffic to your website is by utilizing as method called PPC campaigns. PPC campaigns are just what they sound like; every time someone clicks onto your site from the PPC link you have to pay a fee. Google’s version is called AdWords and once you select the words you want to use your website link will come up in the sponsor section of the front page when someone types in that word for a search. You provide the ad copy and if well written, you will certainly see an increase of web traffic.

3. Blogging: There are many free blogging services that you can use to help to promote your website. Once you set these blogs up you can then blog about anything that relates to your website. So if you have a website about dogs, then you can blog about the new dog food that is coming out. Somewhere in the blog you will have a link to your website and this will give the reader a chance to click on it to find out more information.

Once more, there are numerous ways to go about promoting your website but the methods here are simply the most successful. By utilizing all three and staying at it, you will eventually have all the web traffic you want and then some. Just be sure that your site is up to par when all the extra visitors come knocking.

Why Adsense Isn’t Performing Well on Your Blog

I’m fortunate enough to make a nice living from running Google Adsense on my blogs and websites, and I often get questions from folks who are trying to figure out why the program doesn’t perform for them.  How can you make dollars–even hundreds of dollars–a day instead of mere pennies?

In this article, I’m covering some of the most common reasons people have trouble making money from Adsense.

<b>1. Adsense works best on niche consumer-oriented blogs</b>

To those of us who have been making money online for a while, this seems obvious, but lots of new folks haven’t had that ah ha realization yet. 

If your blog is a journal of your life or serves mostly to entertain, it’s not going to be a good candidate for Adsense (and–I’ll be honest here–it’s probably not going to make much from other programs either).

The best performers are blogs that are focused on a specific niche.  Even more, that niche should have lots of products or services associated with it. 

For example, a blog on home improvement (many of my sites are in the home and garden niche) can do well since there are all sorts of tools and products people buy when they’re looking to remodel or otherwise improve their homes.  There are also plenty of services related to this niche, everything from roofing companies to pool maintenance outfits.  All of those companies that offer products or services in that niche will want to advertise on your blog, and they’re willing to pay well for qualified clicks.

On the other hand, if your blog is unfocused or attracts people looking more for entertainment than information related to products and services, you’ll find advertisers less likely to pay well (that’s when you see those 1 and 2 cent clicks).

<b>2. Ads must be placed prominently in order to attract attention</b>

I noticed a gal on Twitter complaining that Adsense was making her something like 18 cents a day.  I checked out her site, and lo and behold, her tiny 125×125 Adsense block was way over on the right side of her blog <i>below the fold</i>.

If you want to make money with Adsense, stick those ads where people will see them!

This means getting them as close to your content as possible (if you can wrap the ads right into the blog post, it’s best) and keeping them above the fold (people shouldn’t have to scroll down to see your ads).

Also, don’t be afraid to use <i>big</i> ad blocks.  Those large rectangles are the best performers–people can’t miss them.  If you want to make money from your blog, you can’t be shy about placing those ads prominently.

<b>3. Write about products or services that cost a lot</b>

It’s a foregone conclusion that you’ll make more per click from a blog that reviews 0-00 backyard grills than one that reviews books or cds that cost .  The profit margins are a lot higher on big ticket items, so advertisers can afford to bid more per click.

It’s also helpful if the items you’re writing about are easily purchased over the internet.  Even though hot tubs cost thousands of dollars, they tend to be items that people try out first and buy locally.  On the other hand, software packages that cost a few hundred dollars are logical choices for ordering online.

As you can see from this short list, the real secret to doing well with Adsense is to pick your niche–and start a blog–based on the potential for profit rather than adding Adsense to an existing blog and hoping it will make you rich.

If your existing blog isn’t at all consumer oriented, but it has a lot of traffic, you can always use it to drive traffic to a new blog that does work well with the Adsense model.  Don’t give up–you can definitely make good money from Adsense (and other affiliate and advertising programs as well), if you’re willing to build a site that will appeal to both visitors <i>and</i> advertisers.

Promoting Your Website

The most commonly discussed ways are reciprocal linking (swapping links) and buying links. Yet there’s another important tool for building links that should be a part of your toolbox: distributing content in exchange for one-way inbound links.

The big advantage of content distribution over swapping links is that the links built are one-way, and therefore presumably more valuable. Of course, reciprocal links still have value, but relying primarily on them might hamper your SEO efforts.

I link my site A to your site, so you link your site to my site B. The problems are that this can be a lot of work, and also, Google can detect indirect links if you do it more than once with the same group of sites, which might make your linking arrangements look like a link farm.

The problem with paid links is 1) the costs add up; 2) search engines are getting better and better at discounting paid links. According to Matt Cutts’ blog, “I wouldn’t be surprised if search engines begin to take stronger action against link buying in the near future…link-selling sites can lose their ability to give reputation (e.g. PageRank and anchortext).”

These are the kinds of Content you can distribute.

Articles: This is the essential kind of content distribution, to the point that many people consider content distribution simply as “article marketing.” However, you’re missing out on a few other sources of links if you only do articles.

News blurbs: A lot of news-style sites will only reprint pieces of a couple of paragraphs. The good news is that often enough the whole point of these news blurbs is to include links to other sites, in a sort of “look what we’ve found” kind of way, a la Slashdot.org

Press Releases: There are some sites that aggressively reprint press releases. A press release is like an article, only in a very specific press release format, and frankly that’s not that enjoyable to read. I don’t know why some sites are so head-over-heels over press releases, but, hey, that’s their business. The good news is that even if you can’t write and don’t want to hire a writer, press releases (at least basic ones) are pretty easy to do.

Tools, games and other webware: Sites with popular tools, software, Flash games and other webware often let other sites use it in exchange for a link. The big potential downside is technical support.

Images: Images, especially charts and photographs, are important forms of content on the web. If you have great images on your site and people ask you to use them on their sites, require a backlink in exchange. The problem with images is that they are so easily stolen. Stolen words can be uncovered with a web search. You could try to watermark images with a copyright symbol, URL, and the link requirement. But in the process you’d make the image much less desirable.

Web Design Templates: These have been freely distributed for a long time. Yet they are even more easily stolen than images. Also, if you embed a link in the footer of a web template, what you’ll get back are sitewide links, which are often thought to be filtered out in search engines.

You need optimized anchor text to rank high for any competitive keyword. That means you need your target keyword in the anchor text, and very importantly, variants of the target keyword (too many links with the exact same anchor text may be filtered). The problem is that some sites by default don’t let you choose the anchor text of the link to your site. So you need to: 1) look for sites that do reprint content with optimized anchor text; 2) specifically ask for your target anchor text to be used. Also, do keep in mind that a true natural linking structure will require you to have a number of links that are not anchor-text-optimized, typically with the URL as the anchor text.

Finding sites to submit content is the biggest challenge. You can start by asking around to any other webmasters you already have a relationship with. Next, web-search. The classic method is “submit article” + [keyword]. Most of the sites you find this way won’t be good candidates, which is why this can be a bit labor-intensive. I use offshore labor for this step, as well as a program that will sort and store all the search results into a spreadsheet; otherwise it might not be worth it. Then again, the same would be true for finding reciprocal linking partners.

For the last 2 years, I have been promoting for one of my friend’s bands, Adelitas Way (and yes, for those of you who watch E!, this is the same band featured on Paradise city with the same lead singer who was featured on VH1′s Strip Search).

The band and some others advertise with fliers, gigs, myspace, etc; I am in charge of contacting radio stations and promoting to them.

One new idea that I have come up with is to create a webpage that features a video with background music of their single and shows a bio and photos of the band, which will play as soon as the page is clicked on. There would be other photos of the boys, links to their myspace pages, individual bio’s for each, and a link to buy their cd outside of the video on the page. I might even add a quote from one or all of the boys which would explain to the viewers what the site is for and maybe something from their own perspective about the band.

As far as the webpage goes, do you have any other suggestions?
what I meant by "as soon as the page is clicked on" is as soon as someone clicks on the link to get to the page; in other words, it would start playing instantly.
